Mother-Daughter Beauty Tips

Kick back and enjoy some fun together with these mother-daughter beauty ideas.

Preschoolers (ages 2-5) Little girls often love to have their hair brushed and braided. Take 15 minutes out of every day to do her hair – or save it for special occasions. You can make it sparkle with hair clips, headbands and even some sparkly spray from the drug store (make sure they cover their eyes).

Once the child is three or four, pick out some wacky nail polish to paint her fingers and toes. Washington, D.C.-based mom Meredith Sumner says her three-year-old daughter Grace loves having her toes painted bright red or pink.

Grade-schoolers (ages 6-10) Create your own at-home hair salon. Have fun crimping or straightening your daughter's hair or try a French braid. If she's into it, try coloring your daughter's hair with semi-permanent hair dye to surprise the other members of your family (be sure to read all the instructions). While you're waiting for the dye to set, you could paint each other's nails (or, you may choose to paint hers and yours). Put on some fun music and make a morning of it.

If you're not great at hair and nails yourself, visit a salon or spa that does both and get a hair cut and your nails painted. When you're done, go for lunch.

To look at beauty in a different way, take a nature walk and pick out things that are beautiful for unique reasons—flowers, animals, etc. Or take a stroll along busy downtown streets and find hidden beauty in the diversity of the city.

Tweens/teens (ages 11+) Why not pass on some of your beauty to help others in need? If you or your daughter has long hair, take a trip to your hair salon and have your stylist cut off your ponytails. Then donate them to Locks of Love, a non-profit charity that makes wigs for kids who have lost their hair because of a medical condition. Or call a children's hospital to see if you can spend the day with some young girls. Pack a bag of hair accessories, lipstick and costume jewelry and make a spa house call to the hospital.

If you need some rejuvenation and relaxation, plan a mother-daughter spa escape. You can relax the day away at a local spa. Enjoy a facial or massage and meet back in the steam room. Make a day of it and go for lunch afterwards. Or, pack your bags and head out for a weekend spa retreat. The Cape Codder Resort & Spa near Hyannis , MA has a parent and child massage, facials, manicures, and even an indoor water park with wave pool and waterslide for some post-spa fun. The Phantom Horse Spa in Phoenix , AZ was voted one of America 's top kid-friendly spas by Child magazine.
