Whether it's choosing a new outfit for a big event, window shopping or finding a hidden treasure in a thrift store, shopping as a mother-daughter team can be a retail adventure. Check out these shopping ideas.
Preschoolers (ages 2-5) A dollar store can be a fun, inexpensive shopping destination. With a budget of a few dollars, scour the aisles for toys and treasures. Then head to a park and play with your new toys.
Get your daughter involved in picking out groceries and teach her about different foods from around the world. Leaf through the grocery flyers and have her circle some non-perishable food items. Then drop them off at your local food bank.
Catalogue browsing can also be fun for preschoolers. Washington, DC-based mother Meredith Sumner says her daughter, Grace, 3, loves flipping through catalogues and pointing to her favorites.
Grade-schoolers (ages 6-10) Take a trip to a local costume jewelry store and buy a charm bracelet. Then pick out a charm for each other, making it a running tradition to go charm shopping every few months.
Make a shopping trip to help out others in need. Call a women's shelter and find out different things that mothers and kids would enjoy. Go shopping and fill gift bags with the little treasures, then drop off the treats at the shelter.
On the weekends, take a walk through your neighborhood, looking for garage sales. You never know what treasures you'll find for a quarter!
Tweens/teens (age 11 +) It's more about spending time together than actually buying something. If you're on a mission for a new pair of shoes or jeans, make a day of it. Have lunch or take a break for hot chocolate.
If your daughter has reached her teenage years, visit a cosmetic counter so she can learn how to properly apply makeup and care for her skin. Bobbi Brown specializes in teenage beauty.
